An elder in the garden requires little maintenance attention. The pivotal points of exemplary care are watering, fertilizing and cutting. Find out here how you can competently meet the few requirements.

How to water an elderberry?
Elder reacts indignantly to powder-dry soil by shedding all of its leaves. Experienced hobby gardeners therefore make sure that the soil is constantly moist. If the natural rainfall is not sufficient, it is watered. Always pour the water directly onto the tree grate and not over the leaves and blossoms.
Does elderberry have to be fertilized?
Don't let your wild fruit trees go hungry. Apply an initial fertilization in the spring of 60 grams of slow-release fertilizer per square meter. Alternatively, work compost, horn shavings (€32.93) or another organic fertilizer into the soil every 3-4 weeks.
What are the specifications for the right cut?
A shape and maintenance cut is not one of the mandatory maintenance measures. In view of the lush growth, an annual pruning is nevertheless recommended. How to do it right:
- Elder blossoms and bears fruit on the previous year's wood
- A date after the harvest from December to March is therefore ideal
- Cut back any branches that have been removed by half to two-thirds
- cut young shoots a little only if necessary
- the incision begins just above one eye
In connection with the pruning, the entire elder is thoroughly thinned out so that it thrives again in an airy and loose manner. Take this opportunity to remove any water shoots that sprout vertically from the roots.
How can an elder get sick?
All elderberry species are naturally disease resistant. When it comes to health impairments, the three following infections are at the top of the suspect list:
- umbel wilt
- drainage
- gray mold
There is a lot you can do in advance to ensure that your elder does not get hit. This includes planting in a suitable location, an appropriate planting distance and a balanced supply of water and nutrients.
tips and tricks
The frugal elder can easily cope with transplanting as long as it is done during the first 2-3 years. Choose a date in spring or autumn. Four weeks before you separate the roots in the eaves area and water thoroughly. Plant the wood in the new location exactly as deep as it was before.
