Gathering wild blueberries in the forest

In this country, the wild forest blueberries usually grow in sparse moor forests and on moist mountain slopes at low altitudes. Foraging blueberries in the forest is a great way to escape the mid-summer heat while contributing to a healthy diet. However, many people shy away from collecting wild forest blueberries because of the risk of the fox tapeworm pathogen, which can actually be rendered harmless by washing or boiling. If, for this reason, you still prefer to grow the wild blueberries yourself on your fenced-in property that is far from the forest, this is basically possible. However, even with good care in the garden, forest blueberries bring a much lower yield than the cultivated blueberries specially bred for cultivation.

Prepare the location for forest blueberries

Just like the cultivated blueberries, forest blueberries also have certain requirements for their respective location. These are for example:

  • a partially shaded place
  • an acidic soil
  • no waterlogging

Unlike cultivated blueberries, the more sensitive forest blueberries do not tolerate transplanting into full sun. You do not necessarily need a pure peat soil, but the subsoil should be as lime-free as possible and have a pH value between 4.0 and 5.0. In most gardens, this requires replacing soil material or at least acidifying the soil. In order not to damage the sensitive blueberry roots with waterlogging, the subsoil should be loose and not too loamy.

Get wild blueberry plants

Wild forest blueberries should only be removed from a piece of forest in consultation with the landowner. Although wild blueberries are not available in every garden center, numerous specialist retailers offer them for sale under the botanical name Vaccinium myrtillus. Choose a planting time in autumn or spring in order to achieve the best possible growth results.

When purchasing forest blueberries, consider their relatively strong propagation instinct. Even when used as ground cover, these can spread over a suitable area in a relatively short time via root suckers and self-seeding.
