Green classics
They shimmer green-yellow to whitish and have proven themselves in home gardens for generations. There is really nothing wrong with the following strains:
- Green ball: smooth, translucent skin, slightly sour taste, 100 centimeters tall
- White Lion: ancient variety with round fruits, particularly juicy and sweet, suitable for tub cultivation
- King of Trumps: yellow, juicy berries, marbled red, ideal for eating straight from the bush and for freezing
Red flares
With their red fruits, the following varieties not only promise refreshing enjoyment, but also decorate the visual appearance of the garden:
- Maiherzog: old variety from 1890 with thick, red berries, wonderful aroma for eating fresh and for preserving
- Ironmonger: noble breed from England with fruit hanging in pairs, very thin skin
- Red triumph: rarity with countless small gooseberries, well suited for green picking
Thornless gooseberries
If you grow these gooseberry varieties, even the children will help with the harvest. The following breeds do not require any thorns at all:
- Larell: smooth, red berries, resistant to bursting and very sweet, the ideal gooseberry for the balcony and terrace
- Pax: for harvest from the end of June, beautiful red fruits, resistant to American gooseberry powdery mildew
- Spinefree: very robust, light red gooseberries with a smooth skin and almost no spines
Ideal candidates for high stem gooseberries
They are undoubtedly gaining ground in small gardens, because high stemmed gooseberries still deliver a bountiful harvest when space is limited:
- Hinnonmäki: high-bearing with red berries, growth height up to 120 centimetres, little hairy and resistant to bursting
- Invicta: fast-growing, robust, lots of green gooseberries with a sour, refreshing aroma
- Mucurines: light green fruits, extremely aromatic and resistant to powdery mildew and leaf fall
Innovative breeding
Do you like to plant fruit that is out of the ordinary in your garden? Then you are well advised with the duo gooseberry. Here two varieties unite on a single shrub. With 'Hinnonmäki yellow and red' you are sure to attract curious looks over the garden fence.
tips and tricks
If you prefer to keep your gooseberries in buckets, a minimum volume of 30-40 liters is advisable. Since most varieties achieve an annual growth of up to 40 centimeters, very frequent repotting would be necessary. This stress does not do the flat-rooters any good.
