There is not always a protected corner on the balcony or terrace in which the hydrangea can be overwintered. In this case, the hydrangea will have to move indoors and take care of the cold season in a frost-free and cool room. The basement is very suitable for this.

Potted hydrangeas, like many other plants, are best overwintered in the basement

Bring hydrangea into the house in good time

The hibernation of the hydrangea lasts from November to the end of March. Since many Hydrangea species form buds in the previous year, potted plants should be put into winter storage before the first night frosts.

The optimal conditions in the cellar

The basement room for hibernation should ideally be two to ten degrees warm. Ventilate the room daily so that humidity can escape and shoots and buds do not begin to rot.

Don't forget to water

Make sure that the soil in the flower pot does not dry out too much, causing it to clump together and thereby suffocating the roots of the hydrangea. Water the plant moderately but regularly whenever the top inches feel dry.

tips and tricks

As soon as the hydrangea sprout again in spring, you can give it more light. At first, place plants on the balcony or terrace by the hour so that they slowly get used to the changed conditions.
