- Dragon trees feel at home in warm temperatures all year round
- Some exceptions prove the rule
- The balcony is only suitable as a seasonal location for the dragon tree
It is not for nothing that the dragon tree is visually reminiscent of various types of palm trees, as this exotic species generally likes it relatively warm all year round. Since dragon trees are very sensitive to frosty temperatures, they are mostly cultivated purely as indoor plants.

Dragon trees feel at home in warm temperatures all year round
Most dragon tree species appreciate consistently warm temperatures of around 18 to 24 degrees Celsius all year round. If the plants also stand with their roots in suitable soil, enjoy high humidity and are repotted regularly, this optimal care sometimes even bears fruit in the form of the rather rare blossom of the dragon tree. Sunlight and warmth shouldn’t be too much of a good thing: the window sill above the heating system is an unsuitable location due to the severe dehydration even with regular watering and due to the risk of sunburn on the leaves of the plants with south-facing windows.
Some exceptions prove the rule
While most dragon trees can already show the first signs of failure at temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius and let their leaves droop, the Canary Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco) can also tolerate temperatures of around 10 degrees Celsius during its hibernation. There are also dragon trees that can survive even colder temperatures unscathed in exceptional situations. However, these are specimens that, due to their biblical age, have a particularly thick trunk and are therefore less sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
The balcony is only suitable as a seasonal location for the dragon tree
In summer, a balcony that is not too hot can serve as a location for one or more dragon trees. However, you should pay attention to the following things:
- some protection from drafts
- regular spraying of the leaves with water (to compensate for low humidity)
- the timely move into the house in late summer (beware of cool autumn nights)
tips
In the room, at a certain distance from the nearest window, the dragon tree can grow very one-sidedly. Since this always wants to stretch in the direction of the sunlight, you can ensure even and compact growth by turning the plants regularly about every 14 days.
