The Wilhelmsbad landscape park is one of the most popular local recreation areas in Hesse. The garden festival in Hanau: meeting place for plant lovers
When two herbalists discovered a forest spring in 1709, they could not have guessed that the fountain erected here would one day form the center of one of the most beautiful landscape parks in Hesse. In 1777, Hereditary Prince Wilhelm von Hessen-Kassel commissioned the construction of a spacious complex for guests. The landscape garden, in which various attractions such as a historic carousel and an artificially created ruin are embedded, still invites you to stroll and offers peace and relaxation.
It forms the romantic backdrop for the Hanau Garden Festival, which takes place every year in June. More than 200 exhibitors offer exquisite goods and handicrafts in small pagoda tents on an area of more than 20,000 square meters. In addition to plants, perennials, garden furniture and interiors, you can discover art objects and accessories that make the house and garden more beautiful. A depot service conveniently transports your acquired treasures to the collection point at the car park, while you can stroll past the diverse stands and enjoy the supporting programme. Take a look at the traditional puppet museum, the romantic castle ruins or have fun with a ride on the historic carousel, which is unique in Europe. Of course, the physical well-being is also well taken care of.
tips
Philippsruhe Castle is not far from the Wilhelmsbad Landscape Park, also surrounded by an extremely attractive landscape park with old trees. The focal point is a fountain, from which there is a wonderful view of the castle. There is an amphitheater in the park, which, among other things, is the venue for the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Festival. Garden lovers should not miss to visit this park, which was completely renovated in 2002.
