Birds like to make themselves comfortable in our garden or balcony. Their happy chirping cannot make us forgiving if they leave behind a lot of bird droppings. A scarecrow works wonders. Creative specimens can be made inexpensively from old materials.

Deterrent properties
Birds avoid anything that can kill them. This includes humans, birds of prey and cats. When they spot this danger, they give it a wide berth.
To be on the safe side, they also keep their distance from things that they cannot assess precisely. Things that move, light up, or make any kind of noise.
A good scarecrow makes use of the aforementioned, ideally it combines several deterrent aspects.
Human-like scarecrow
The image of a human-looking scarecrow is probably in everyone's mind. It is placed in private gardens and fields to keep birds away and do no harm. Now you can DIY your own custom creation. You will need the following materials and tools:
- a wooden slat 2 m long
- a wooden slat 1 m long
- rough sawn and approx. 3 x 5 cm thick
- saw, hammer and nails
- burlap, straw
- scissors and twine
- old clothes, hat
craft instructions
- Sharpen one end of the long batten so the scarecrow can later be pounded into the ground.
- Fasten the shorter batten across the long batten, about 1.5 m from the pointed end. She forms the outstretched arms.
- Choose a suitable spot in the garden and use a hammer to hammer in the wooden framework about 30 cm deep.
- Form a head by wrapping straw around the slat.
- Slip linen over it and tie at bottom with twine.
- Dress the scarecrow in old, colorful clothes if possible and put a hat on her.
- If you feel like it, you can also sculpt hands out of straw.
tips
Fasten the hat so that the next breeze does not blow it into the neighboring garden.
Glittering scarecrow for the balcony
A small balcony usually does not offer enough space to set up a large scarecrow. But you can always find a place for a little scarecrow. Old CDs are ideal because they shimmer in the sun and irritate the birds.
- Provide multiple CDs
- paint a human face on every CD
- Glue on straw or wool threads as hair
attach CDs
Thread a piece of nylon thread through the hole in each CD to allow it to dangle in the wind after hanging.
You can put a wooden slat in a flower box (€16.99) and screw two smaller wooden slats to it to form a cross. The CDs are attached to the four ends. Perhaps you will discover other suitable hanging options on your balcony.
