The balcony is an oasis where we can relax and recharge our batteries. Birdsong is idyllic and that's all well and good. Plenty of bird droppings and plucked plants, that's unacceptable! A scarecrow drives away unwanted visitors from our kingdom.

Scarecrows not only help to keep birds away, they are also a beautiful eye-catcher

An inviting balcony

The balcony is open on many sides and therefore freely accessible for birds. Its enclosure is an ideal landing place for pigeons, sparrows and the like, which they like to fly to frequently in the summer.

The more beautifully a balcony is designed, the more comfortable its owner feels. However, this also applies to the feathered guests. Above all, colorful flowers, herbs and other plants offer you a piece of nature in the middle of the settlement.

The ugly legacies

A bird likes to chirp in company. Once a balcony has been discovered and approved, more and more birds settle on it. While they linger on the balcony, they leave a lot of bird droppings that stubbornly stick everywhere. The removal is tedious, apart from the fact that he is not entirely healthy either.

Scarecrow as a guard

When we are on the balcony, birds avoid it or are easily chased away. They don't want to get too close to people, probably because they sense danger.

If we cannot defend the balcony with our presence, a scarecrow will take over this task. However, it must be designed in such a way that it inspires respect for the birds. Good scarecrows are:

  • a humanoid figure
  • dummies of birds of prey
  • glittering objects
  • wind chimes

Bought or made?

Space, time and money are the three components that play a role in purchasing a scarecrow. The easiest way is certainly to buy one or more raven figurines and position them in suitable places on the balcony. A raven can be had for less than 10 euros.

But you can also hang up a wind chime or some discarded CDs that glitter in the light. Creative creations can be made that drive away birds and decorate the balcony at the same time.

tips

A scarecrow that looks like a human can be visible to anyone from afar, depending on your location. This can occasionally lead to irritation when it is hung up, for example.

Provide movement

Don't let the tranquility fool you. The little birds are clever, keep their distance and observe. If the scarecrow doesn't move for days, they lose their fear. Therefore, mount dummies so that they are moved by the wind, or change their position at regular intervals.
