With its beautiful flowers, the acacia enriches every garden. Would you also like to cultivate the exotic tree? Then find out below how best to plant it.

In our latitudes, acacias should be better grown in pots

Acacias do not tolerate cold

The acacia is very affected by sub-zero temperatures. In summer, on the other hand, the deciduous tree captivates with an extensive bloom. In the company of other plants, the acacia does not feel comfortable. The little diva among the deciduous trees makes special demands on the planting.

Better to plant in a bucket

Since the acacia likes to stand alone, keeping it in a bucket is recommended. Especially since digging up when frost is approaching would be very cumbersome. After all, the deciduous tree requires wintering indoors. Planted in a pot, moving in the cold season is easier due to the better mobility.

demands on the bucket

  • Sufficient volume (about twice, better still three times the size of the root ball)
  • Drainage so that water and rainwater can drain off
  • Opening at the bottom to aerate the roots
  • Do not use conventional peat soil
  • Enrich the substrate with coconut fiber or lava granules (€13.99) instead

Hibernation in bucket

Bring your acacia indoors before the first frost to avoid dying. Various locations are suitable here, but they all have advantages and disadvantages:

  • dark and cool at 0-5°C (acacia sheds its foliage)
  • bright and sunny at 10-15°C (even too warm temperatures lead to leaf loss)
  • ideally high humidity (50% rising)
