There are two related but distinct genera of coneflowers, namely the yellow coneflower (Latin Rudbeckia) and the red coneflower (Latin Echinacea). There are different types of both genera, but they are all very easy to care for.

There are two types of coneflowers: the yellow coneflower and the red coneflower

What types of coneflowers are there?

Contrary to what the name suggests, the red coneflower comes in different colors. In addition to plants in the classic crimson pink, the coneflower is also available in white, orange or bright red, sometimes with very decorative double flowers. The growth height varies between 6o cm and one meter. In its American homeland, the purple coneflower even grows up to 1.50 m.

The Rudbeckia (yellow coneflower) is also available in different types. The golden-yellow color variant with a dark center is classic, but reddish, reddish-brown and copper-colored flowers and color gradients also occur. As with Echinacea, there are also filled variants.

Small varieties of Rudbeckia are about 20 - 25 cm or a maximum of 40 cm tall. They are excellent for borders and containers, while the split-leaved coneflowers make a very attractive background planting, reaching up to 2m in size.

One of the most unusual types of coneflowers are the filled variants. The Echinacea purpurea Razzmatazz variety is a real eye-catcher with its purple-pink flowers and a height of about one meter. The Hot Papaya variety is just as decorative, also filled, but this time with bright orange-red flowers and a little smaller with a height of up to 80 cm.

Medicinal herb Echinacea

Echinacea purpurea or Echinacea angustifolia is often used to strengthen the immune system in cases of susceptibility to infections, but it also has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. It also helps with existing infections such as bronchitis and colds. Externally, it is mainly used in the form of a tincture for poorly healing wounds, boils, abscesses and even psoriasis.
