Everyone who likes to eat chili con carne knows red beans, also known as kidney beans. To do this, a can is quickly opened and mixed into the meat. The beans are tastier when they are cooked from dried kidneys. You can easily freeze larger quantities.

Kidney beans are best frozen in portions

Important facts about the kidney bean

The kidney originally comes from Peru and is cultivated in Africa and the USA. It got its name from its kidney shape, because the English term for kidney is "kidney". Kidney beans are healthy, taste slightly sweet and have a floury consistency. Nevertheless, they are also very popular with children.
Kidney beans are sold ready-cooked in cans in supermarkets. If you prefer the better-tasting version, use the dried red beans and cook them yourself.

Freeze kidney beans

Before kidney beans can be frozen, you must first cook them. It is practical if you cook a pack of dried kidney beans at once and then freeze them in portions. So you always have the required quantities at hand.

It is best to follow the package instructions. The beans are soaked overnight and cooked in plenty of water the next day. Rinse the beans under running water and let them cool. Then you can prepare the beans for freezing.

Kidneys in cold sleep

To ensure that the freshly cooked beans do not clump together into a lump of ice in the freezer, there are a few steps to follow.

  1. Depending on the amount of beans to be frozen, line one or two baking trays with paper towels.
  2. Distribute the beans on the paper so that they are not on top of each other, but always in a single layer.
  3. Cover the beans again with kitchen paper so that the last bit of liquid is absorbed. If liquid remains on the beans, freezing will result in too much ice.
  4. When the beans are well dry and cold, you can put them in large freezer bags.
  5. Try to squeeze as much air out of the bag as possible and close it as high up as possible.
  6. Lay the bags flat in the freezer, distributing the beans as evenly as possible.
  7. After an hour or two in the freezer, the beans are well frozen. Now you can loosen them up again to prevent them from sticking together.
