The Brazilian mammoth leaf (bot. Gunnera) does not bear its name unjustly. Within a few weeks, an impressive plant of considerable dimensions grows from the overwintered root. In autumn, the above-ground green disappears again.

The leaves of the mammoth leaf can grow up to two meters in size

How big does a mammoth leaf get?

Even when planting, you should take into account the enormous space requirements of this perennial. It can easily grow three meters wide and high. In autumn the green fades, only the root ball overwinters. Interestingly, the flowers are rather inconspicuous and the fruits are very small. If you cultivate the mammoth leaf in a bucket, it will not get quite as big as outdoors.

The essentials in brief:

  • Blade diameter: up to 2 m
  • Handle length: up to 2.5 m
  • Pistils up to 1.2 m
  • Plant height: up to 3 m
  • Plant diameter: up to 4 m

tips

Be sure to give your mammoth leaf enough space so that it comes into its own and feels comfortable.
