When time is of the essence, rolling turf is more practical than sowing lawn seeds. Buy, roll out and the green surface is ready. But what to do if the rolls have already been bought but you can't unroll them immediately? Can turf be stored at all?

Turf may only be stored for a short time

Turf is perishable fresh produce

Even if turf is no longer or not yet connected to the earth, it is still a living surface. The grass still has all the demands that a growing plant can have.

  • there is a need for nutrients
  • Water is essential to life
  • Light and air are needed every day
  • Heat and cold have an impact

Because many of the needs after rolling up can no longer be met well, the lawn is allowed to grow as long as possible and is only rolled up when needed.

Lay the turf immediately

Heat causes the turf to dry out. Rain, on the other hand, causes rapid rotting. Both are not only undesirable, but also expensive. Because it may well be that the lawn grows poorly or is completely unusable.

A satisfactory result can only be expected if the turf is laid immediately. Plan enough time and enough workers for an upcoming laying of rolled turf.

tips

Complete all ground preparation work before having the turf delivered to you. This is the only way you can be sure that the rollout can start immediately.

Store rolled turf if necessary

It is ideal if the lawn is laid within a day. But sometimes the relocation starts later than planned, or the duration of the work was simply underestimated. In the meantime, you need to keep the rolls well to keep the turf alive.

Find a shady place for storage so that the turf does not dry out. The rolled turf must not be covered with plastic sheets that do not allow any air exchange. Here, too, you cannot keep the turf for longer than two days.

Since rolled-up lawns can develop a lot of heat inside the roll, it is better to roll them out in an open area and water them on very warm days.

tips

Even if the laying of the turf only takes a single day, you should keep the delivered rolls in the shade. Just a few hours in the blazing sun are enough to rob them of valuable strength.
