Dates are becoming increasingly popular - and rightly so. The noble fruits with the special, sticky consistency are wonderfully sweet and also extremely healthy. This fact makes them a suitable alternative to normal sugar: Simply add sliced or pureed dates to muesli or smoothies to provide sweetness without putting a strain on the organism. Dates can be bought either pitted or with a pit. If you are dealing with fruit that has not been pitted, you must first pit it. However, this is not a problem. We will tell you step by step how to do it.

Pitting dates - simple step-by-step instructions
All you need to pit dates is
- the fruits,
- a sharp knife,
- a stable base and
- some kitchen paper.
This is how the pitting of the dates works quickly and reliably:
- Place the dates on a stable surface, such as a sturdy cutting board.
- Place some paper towels next to the pad.
- Take a sharp knife and cut the first date lengthwise all around. How to halve the fruit.
- You can then separate the two halves of the date.
- Pull the stone out of the “pithy” date half. For this purpose, you generally do not need any special tool, but can easily use your fingers.
- Place the stone on the kitchen paper.
- Repeat steps 3 through 6 with all other dates.
- You can now eat (and enjoy) the pitted dates straight away or process them as you wish - for example, cut them into pieces or puree them.
Special tip: Grow palm trees from date stones…
Do you have desire and patience to let a palm tree grow? Then you shouldn't just throw away the kernels of the dates, but stick them in the ground instead.
Mini Guide:
- Soak the core in warm water for a day or two.
- Put the core in a yoghurt pot with potting soil.
- Pour the whole thing over lightly and cover with foil.
- Place the container in a warm place (near the heater).
After that, it can take two to four weeks (or even longer) to see any development. As soon as the first cotyledon appears, you should place the plantlet as brightly as possible and possibly put it in a larger container. Later, proceed as you (would) do with other palm trees.
