Bed edgings made of willow are very popular because they are particularly attractive in natural gardens. With a little manual skill, you can easily braid them yourself and in this way get a weather-resistant and durable bed border.

The material:
- Despite their robustness, willow rods are very flexible. They are easy to process.
- The raw material simply grows back. Many nurseries and farm shops offer it at low cost.
- The optimal length is about 2.50 meters, the thickness is about 2 centimeters.
- They should be pruned between the end of October and the beginning of March, since then they will not bear any foliage.
Tool List:
A bed border made of willow does not require any more tools than hobby gardeners usually have in the basement anyway:
- Stakes (this can also be thicker willow branches)
- pruning shears
- tension cord
- hammer
Method:
You can enclose the beds directly with the bed edging made of willow. To do this, proceed as follows:
- First tighten a batter board.
- Drive three to five stakes vertically into the ground along the guideline (€7.13). To prevent them from splitting, put a board on if necessary.
The following applies: the narrower the rods are, the more stable the later mesh will be. But don't overdo it, otherwise braiding will be very difficult.
- When braiding, always start and end at a post. If necessary, shorten the rods with the pruning shears. Make sure that thin and thick ends meet to create an even overall picture.
- After a few rows, use a board and a hammer to hammer the wickerwork together so that it thickens.
- Use willow stakes that are still alive, drive them out in the spring and form a beautiful, natural bed border that can definitely keep up with the popular bed border made of boxwood and other plants. This can be used to create interesting structures that blend in harmoniously with the planting.
tips
If you don't want to make the bed border yourself, you can get ready-made willow elements in stores. These are simply stuck into the ground, so that the amount of work is reduced to a minimum.
