Wood is a natural material that is ideal for garden design. A bed edging for vegetable or flower beds made of wood can be easily built by yourself. Even if you are not an experienced do-it-yourselfer, the simple screw connections and the straight course of this bed border make implementation child's play.

Wood that is as hard as possible should be used for edging the bed

The material

The harder the wood, the more durable the edging. In addition to boards from the hardware store, inexpensive construction floorboards are well suited. You will also need square timbers to act as cornerstones.

Use Torx countersunk screws made of stainless steel for the screw connections, as these do not rust.

tool list

  • Cordless screwdriver with drill bits and attachments
  • level
  • folding rule
  • spade or shovel

If you need to saw:

  • saw
  • stop bracket
  • carpenter's pencil

Are the boards not yet treated:

  • wood preservatives
  • paint brush

The construction

  • First measure the length and width of the bed. If you create this again, a plan drawn on paper is very helpful.
  • If you have not already done so at the hardware store, saw the wood to the appropriate length.
  • It makes sense to provide the future bed edging with weather protection. Don't forget the edges. Leave to dry thoroughly.
  • Tighten the batter board, making sure that the corners run at right angles.
  • It is advisable to dig a small trench. The border of the bed lies flat on the ground.
  • introduce cornerstones.
  • Use a piece of cardboard as a drilling template.
  • Pre-drill pillars and boards.
  • Screw all parts together.
  • If the bed is very long, the boards must be screwed together in the middle with one or more additional supports.

tips

It is often read that the frame can now simply be filled with soil and planted. We advise against this, as stubborn weeds can easily make their way through the loose substrate. It makes more sense to first cut off the turf, dig up the soil and free it from all roots. Only then fill in the self-made wooden border with topsoil.
