In a colorful flower bed, the wonderfully colorful blooming perennials, which you have lovingly selected and carefully planted in the garden center, should be seen above all. It is all the more annoying when cornweed, couch grass or goutweed suddenly spread - especially since these weeds are very difficult to remove again. With a few tricks, however, you can keep the unwanted growths away from you in the first place.

Nature strives to cover every free area with vegetation, fallow areas are not intended and are quickly conquered by pioneer plants. This completely natural phenomenon does not stop in the garden, no matter how much you may resist it. However, if you make sure that any free areas in the bed are already "occupied", then even the strongest weeds will have a hard time.
Lay out weed fleece
A commercially available weed fleece (21.70€) does a good job here. You simply lay the fleece over the entire bed area and cut a sufficiently large hole in the planting areas intended for the perennials. Plant the perennials and cover the fleece with either soil, mulch material, gravel, stones or pebbles.

Mulching the flower bed has also been shown to be effective against weeds. Bark mulch, for example, is a natural material that slowly decomposes and has a positive impact on soil composition. However, bark mulch not only has advantages, but also disadvantages: This includes, for example, that the material removes a lot of nitrogen from the soil, which in turn is no longer available to the plants. However, this problem can be avoided by generously spreading horn shavings (€32.93) and gently working them in before mulching. Lawn clippings or straw are also very suitable for mulching, but cannot reliably prevent weeds.
Plant ground cover
True to the motto that where something is already growing, no weeds can find a place anymore, flowering ground covers can be used wonderfully in the easy-care flower bed. Species such as the Balkan cranesbill (Geranium macrorrhizum), blood cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum), fat man (Pachysandra), elf flower (Epimedium) or small periwinkle (Vinca minor) are impressive both with their dense foliage and their pretty flowers.
