Which herbs are suitable for edging beds?
Herbs that grow rather bushy and branch out nicely are best suited for edging a bed. They should also tolerate regular pruning. You can safely use the clippings to prepare food. So that your garden looks harmonious, only choose one herb per bed as a border plant, otherwise the whole thing looks rather restless.
The design of a scented hedge
For a so-called scented hedge you should only use plants whose scent you really like, because after all you want to feel comfortable in your garden. Various shrubs are suitable for a high scented hedge, such as dog rose, jasmine, daphne or lilac. On the other hand, plant a low bed border with herbs of a suitable size.
When choosing your herbs, pay attention to the growth height, but also to the care needs of the plants. Relatively short in stature, Lemon Thyme is particularly attractive as a low border, with its bicolored leaves and light lemon scent. Rosemary exudes an intense scent, but grows taller than thyme. Both prefer sunny locations and can be pruned without any problems.
Sage absolutely needs regular pruning, otherwise it will become lignified in the area near the ground. Unlike many other herbs, it is evergreen. In addition, it even tolerates frost to a certain extent. You can often harvest the leaves fresh for an anti-inflammatory throat and cold tea well into the winter.
If you want to plant lavender as a bed border, then make sure you pay attention to the variety that you buy. Not all lavender has a pleasant scent. Lavendula latifloia, also called spike lavender, is not exactly one of them with its camphor-like, rather strong smell. But he should drive away aphids. French lavender, on the other hand, has a very aromatic scent, but it is not hardy.
