Even if the dwarf tamarillo is one of the exotic plants, it can be easily propagated by beginners. You can choose between sowing and propagation by cuttings, according to your preferences.

Dwarf tamarillos can be propagated from seeds

Where can I get the seeds from?

You can get the seeds of the dwarf tamarillo in specialist shops, for example from special seed dealers on the Internet, or from your own plant, which, by the way, is not hardy. To do this, let the fruits ripen completely, they will then be bright yellow. The harvest season begins quite early in the year.

New fruits continue to ripen throughout the summer, so you can harvest for a long time. Be sure to clean the seeds from the pulp so that they do not begin to rot. If you don't want to sow immediately, let the seeds dry.

The Sowing

Distribute the seeds on a mixture of potting soil and sand and sprinkle some substrate over them. Keep seeds evenly moist at a minimum of 23°C. The growing pots (€16.68) should be bright.

How and where can I get cuttings?

Take the cuttings from your own dwarf tamarillo or ask another gardener to do so. Make sure the cuttings are fresh, otherwise they will root poorly or not at all. You can also search the fresh pruning in autumn for usable cuttings. If necessary, you can use rooting powder to support root formation.

Propagation by cuttings

Cut a few strong and healthy shoots from the dwarf tamarillo. They should be about 15 to 20 inches long. Put the shoots in a sand-peat mixture or a mixture of potting soil and sand. If you keep the substrate constantly moist and warm, the cuttings will usually root quite quickly. The ideal place for this is warm and partially shaded.

The essentials in brief:

  • Sowing possible all year round, but makes more sense in spring
  • Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for about 2 to 3 hours
  • only cover thinly with substrate
  • keep moist but not wet
  • Germination temperature: at least 23 °C
  • Keep cuttings warm and partially shaded
  • also keep moist

tips

When propagating by cuttings, you get exactly the same plants as the mother plant and can already harvest the following year.
