Granite is not only durable but also noble. This is an excellent way to create a bed border. Stone bed edgings are quite popular. Once laid, they require little work, unlike a wooden border, which occasionally needs to be replaced.

Granite stones are ideal for edging beds

Which granite stones are suitable for a bed edging?

Granite stones are available in various sizes and designs, all of which are more or less suitable for edging beds. Depending on your project, you should choose a different version. You can definitely use the 10/10/9 format for a narrow edge that is embedded in the floor. For a higher edge, it is better to use larger paving stones.

Where can I buy granite stones?

You can buy granite in the form of paving or bordering edges in specialist shops (DIY store, builders' merchants or garden supplies), but you can also order it conveniently on the Internet. Then you don't have to transport the heavy stones yourself.

How do I set granite stones as a bed edging?

If you would like to lay a granite mowing edge around your lawn, then it is sufficient if you lay the stones in a row at ground level. For this, an excavation in the height of the stones to be laid plus about five centimeters for a sand bed is sufficient. Gently tap the granite stones with a rubber mallet.

It is better to concrete a higher edging made of small-sized stones so that it does not tip over or become crooked over time. Set larger stones about halfway into the ground, so they will hold up even without concrete with moderate loads.

Setting granite stones - instructions in bullet points:

  • dig a narrow trench along the bed
  • Trench depth = stone height + 5 cm
  • Trench width = stone width
  • Fill in about 5 cm of sand
  • Insert granite stones and tap with a rubber mallet

Is there a cheap alternative to granite?

Unfortunately, granite is not exactly cheap to buy, in contrast to plastic or cast stone. Both are also available in a more or less well-made granite look. You can take a look at these materials at the hardware store. However, keep in mind that plastic is often only weatherproof for a limited time.
