As the name suggests, a bed edging should border beds and set boundaries, but also emphasize the style of the garden. It can be designed in different ways, straight or curved, made of solid materials or plants.

In terms of a harmonious design, you should always keep the style of your garden in mind when choosing the bed edging. Concrete edging is less suitable for a cottage garden, while wicker fences or wooden edging emphasize the character of a natural garden much better. Noble material such as granite, on the other hand, fits very well in a rose garden that is designed accordingly.
Traditional bed edging
Boxwood is certainly not an insider tip for edging beds. But since it can be cut into almost any conceivable shape, you can also use it to create an unusual border. However, this requires creativity and practiced handling of the secateurs.
Even with a bed edging made of wood, you can let your imagination run wild and design it unusually. For example, you can use old railway sleepers or thick branches from your garden.
Saw them into pieces of different lengths. Then drive the pieces deep enough into the ground so that they remain stable. The upper edge can be irregular, which gives your bed edging a special charm.
Braided bed borders
You can buy wicker fences in various designs in hardware stores or garden shops. If you have a hazelnut bush or a willow tree in your garden, you can also braid such an edging yourself. You can adjust the height perfectly to your needs and design the arches you want to fit perfectly.
You can use the annual clippings from your willow or hazel bush for such braiding. If you need more branches for your edging, that's no problem either. These shrubs also tolerate a radical pruning and then sprout again. The thicker branches are suitable for the pegs around which you want to braid. Put them deep enough into the ground, after all they should give the fence stability. For braiding use young flexible shoots of different lengths and thickness.
Edible bed borders
If you would like to design your bed border with plants that can be used for culinary purposes, then you can use herbs, for example. The choice is huge. Lemon balm, rosemary, sage or thyme make it easy to create a fragrant hedge, but chives are also suitable for edging beds. The use of carrots with their filigree cabbage is quite unusual, but very decorative.
Unusual bed borders:
- self braided
- kitchen herbs
- carrots
- self-designed palisades made of branches or railway sleepers
