- Protect young plants easily from severe frost
- Protecting the roots of potted plants from the cold
Due to its Far Eastern origin, the goji berry still has a certain exotic factor in this country, although cultivation is now also established in Germany. In principle, the "common buckthorn" can also cope with severe winters if certain conditions are met.

Overwinter mature shrubs outdoors
Adult bushes of the goji berry can usually spend the winter outdoors without any problems, even in locations with severe continental winters, as they can withstand frosty temperatures down to around - 25 degrees Celsius without damage. However, it is important that the plants are in a sunny and summer-warm location without waterlogging in the soil. Otherwise it could well happen that specimens in permanently wet locations die due to root rot, powdery mildew and other diseases.
Protect young plants easily from severe frost
Young plants bought fresh from the greenhouse or grown by yourself are not yet frost hardy enough, especially after autumn planting, to easily survive the Central European winter outdoors. To prevent plant loss from winter cold, you should:
- If possible, plant young plants in the soil as early as spring
- cover the root area of the plants with an additional layer of mulch
- Pile up leaves or pine branches around the branches that are bare in winter
Protecting the roots of potted plants from the cold
The roots of potted plants on a patio are generally much more exposed to the winter cold than the soil-protected roots of plants in outdoor beds. Therefore, you should protect the goji berries cultivated in a pot from particularly cold night frosts in the area of the roots by wrapping the pot with bubble wrap. It can also protect against particularly severe frost if potted plants are not placed directly on the stone floor of a terrace, but are placed on a thick styrofoam plate (€35.50). Since pot-grown goji berries can be more easily dried out by the wind, they should be watered occasionally on frost-free days.
tips
Goji berries generally prefer a very sunny and warm location. However, they should not be positioned right next to a wall during the winter months, where there are striking differences between day and night temperatures.
