Old wine barrels evoke romantic feelings, especially when they are wildly blooming in the garden. Read here how to plant your wine barrel step by step. We have also put together a selection of the most beautiful plants for your wine barrel.

Plant the wine barrel step by step
To plant your wine barrel you will need:
- Pond liner or another tear-resistant liner
- pebbles
- expanded clay
- garden or potting soil
- plant
- possibly waterproof paint or varnish and brush
- Mulch, (239.00€) dry (!) tree cuttings or logs or a large plastic flower pot or a flower pot made of another light material (about half the height of the wine barrel)
- One or more chipboard(s)
Note: Do not completely fill the wine barrel with soil
Filling your wine barrel completely with soil is not only expensive, it will also add significant weight to the barrel. Filling the entire wine barrel with soil only makes sense if you want to put in a very large plant whose roots will take up all the space. However, if you only want to plant your wine barrel with flowers, you don't need the full depth.
Here are two ways to make the wine barrel "shorter":
- Fill your wine barrel halfway with dry wood or mulch, then cover that layer with wood or chipboard, leaving a more or less flat bottom. It doesn't matter if it's a bit uneven.
- Place a wide flower pot in your wine barrel. Put wooden boards on top.
1. Waterproof the wine barrel
To ensure that your wine barrel lasts for a long time, you should line it in such a way that the moisture from the plants cannot damage the wood. To do this, line your wine barrel with pond liner, which you can overlap slightly over the edge.
If you want to have your wine barrel outside, it also makes sense to paint it on the outside with a weatherproof paint.
2. Drainage
Place about two inches of clay pebbles ($19.73) in the wine barrel. This serves as a drainage layer.
3. Fill with soil and plant
Now fill your wine barrel with soil up to about 15 cm below the rim. Then put your plants in and fill the rest with soil.
4. Cover the foil
You can hide the overhanging foil under overlapping ground cover or hanging plants, or you can cover the soil and foil with moss or mulch.
The wine barrel as a mini pond
Instead of filling the wine barrel with soil and planting it, you can fill it with water and build a pond out of it. To do this, line the barrel with pond liner, build different levels in the barrel with the help of large stones and buckets and then place pond plants in plant baskets on these levels. Fill with water and your pond barrel is ready.
