For various reasons, evergreen hedges or attractive flowering shrubs cannot always be used as privacy screens in the garden. But there are also plenty of ways to visually enhance the standardized wooden privacy screen with a few simple tricks and transform it into an aesthetic garden feature.

A privacy screen can of course be beautified with plants

Climbing plants as a visual enhancement for a privacy screen

In many cases, vines can be a low-cost option to enhance a privacy fence or screen. The following climbing plants sometimes even benefit from the favorable climatic conditions that prevail on the sun-facing side of a privacy wall:

  • kiwi
  • Wisteria
  • trumpet flower
  • grapevine

It also depends on the exact type of privacy screen or fence, which climbing plant promises the best result. A chain-link fence (€34.49) to be covered with trees, for example, can sometimes suffer under the weight of an aging wisteria. The privacy screens available from garden retailers should also only be planted with climbing plants such as clematis or morning glory, as these do not easily damage the wooden walls.

Design the privacy screen as a vertical garden

Why not make optimal use of the often very limited space in a garden? For example, if every square meter in a terraced garden is particularly valuable, then the privacy screen should ideally be used as a vertical garden. For this purpose, simply hangers for balcony boxes (109.00 €) or plant pots are screwed to a stone wall or hung in the spaces between a privacy screen made of pallets using special metal hangers. However, so that the regular watering of this special type of garden is not just a Herculean task, an automatic watering system (32.95 €) (e.g. for drip irrigation) should be installed right at the time of planting.

Tinker with natural materials and beautify the privacy screen

Whether it is a privacy screen made of stone baskets, natural stones or pallets, all of these privacy screen variants can be easily optically enhanced with different natural materials and at the same time given an individual touch. For example:

  • Necklaces made from threaded shells from the last beach vacation
  • Decorating ideas from pine cones and dried flowers
  • ornaments and hay animals made from hay and wire
  • year-round "blooming" garlands of artificial flowers

tips

Just like the decoration in the house, the optical surface design on the privacy screen in the garden can also be adapted to the respective season. So while maritime decorative elements can create a beach feeling in summer, in winter the birds find their food in self-made feeding rings on the privacy screen.
