You don't need a large garden to be successful in gardening - a sunny, south-facing balcony is perfectly adequate for this purpose. Placed in sufficiently large planters and carefully cared for, you can look forward to a nice harvest of tomatoes, cucumbers or even potatoes.

Prefer special types of vegetables for the balcony
When choosing suitable types and varieties of vegetables, you should primarily rely on special balcony varieties. These were specially bred for pot culture, remain relatively small - which can only be an advantage when space is limited - and still deliver a comparatively high yield, assuming conscientious care, of course.
tomatoes
Tomatoes are the classics on every balcony, as the sensitive fruit vegetables often thrive better under sheltered conditions than outdoors. A covered balcony, facing south, provides enough light and warmth for the plants to thrive. The rain protection also ensures that the dreaded late blight loses its terror. Bush tomatoes can be cultivated particularly well on the balcony, but cocktail and cherry tomatoes as well as wild tomatoes (which are often particularly high-yielding) are also very suitable.
cucumbers
Cucumbers also feel very comfortable in the sheltered atmosphere of a balcony - especially if you lead them along a trellis and grow them as far away as possible from any tomatoes. In particular, the snack cucumbers, small and aromatic, are well suited for growing on the balcony.
peppers and chillies
Peppers and chillies are real sun worshipers, need a lot of heat and careful care. Planted in large pots and in a sunny spot, you can expect a bountiful harvest of crunchy fruit.
radish
Easy to care for, fast-growing and can even be grown in the balcony box: radishes should not be missing in any balcony garden. The crisp, small roots can be sown again and again from early spring until well into autumn, even in temporary planters such as cut open tetra packs.
snow peas
Children in particular love the sweet, crunchy sugar balls: They can also be grown very easily in the window box or in a bakery box, provided you choose a variety that does not climb. These do not need climbing aids and remain relatively low.
salads and herbs
Cut and pick lettuce as well as many herbs are also perfect for cultivation in a wide variety of planters. These vegetables in particular can be positioned in hanging baskets, on the balcony wall or on a planting ladder to save space.
tips
You don't even have to do without fresh, self-harvested fruit on the balcony: specially bred balcony varieties, but also columnar fruit varieties do not take up too much space and provide you with delicious sweets.
