In order to protect their own garden from prying eyes or to separate certain areas in a garden from each other, garden owners tend to use hedges and various types of walls as standard. With a little creativity and courage, the functional privacy screen can also become a design element for a contemporary recreation area in the countryside.

Each garden wall must be approved

Use the winter to paint a privacy fence

Wooden fences in the garden are usually painted in a dull grey-brown or in an inconspicuous hunter's green. For a change and for the desired pep in a family garden, how about a picket fence with boldly patterned pickets? This garden project can be carried out with the whole family as winter handicraft work in a small workshop or in the hobby room in the basement, which is well protected from paint splashes. Just get the following supplies and you can start painting:

  • the required number of fence slats
  • Fence posts and crossbars (for later assembly outdoors)
  • waterproof paints in a wide variety of colors
  • brushes of different thicknesses

Then paint the fence slats with different patterns or motifs to your heart's content. Children are usually enthusiastic when they can admire their own painting work every day in summer on their own picket fence.

Windows on the privacy wall as an optical illusion and decorative sophistication

In recent years, a funny design trend for the garden has become more and more widespread: Real or replica window frames are mounted on wooden privacy screens, which are fitted with a mirror instead of the usual glazing. This creates the optical illusion that the mirror acts like a window through which you can look at the surroundings. There is hardly a more attractive way to visually enhance the gray concrete wall of a garage on the neighboring property. To further enhance the window effect, a window box with geraniums or trailing petunias can be mounted under the window.

Climbing plants on the lattice fence

In a small garden, you quickly come up against spatial limits when it comes to privacy protection. In a very limited garden area, it can therefore make sense to use climbing plants such as ivy as a year-round green privacy screen with minimal space requirements. Iron trellises are ideal as a low-cost and easy-to-assemble trellis. These should (although probably soon become overgrown) be galvanized for reasons of durability.

As charming as a castle ruin: the irregularly shaped stone wall

Stone baskets (or "gabions") are now considered to be a particularly quick and durable variant of a stone wall in the garden. However, the stone walls, shaped like a historic castle ruin, are visually much more charming. With their irregular height and integrated hanging pots for flowers, they are ideally made of historic bricks from demolished houses. Please note, however, that the erection of such stone walls often requires separate permits from the local building authorities.

tips

Do you have access to discarded wooden pallets from a commercial enterprise through your relatives or acquaintances? Then simply build casual lounge furniture and a trendy privacy screen from old pallets in your garden, which you can sand down or paint colorfully according to your taste.
