If you do not want to put a mini plastic sandpit in your garden, but want to build a practical and durable sandpit yourself, then a solid substructure is recommended. First mark out the sandbox, then dig out the ground there.

The depth of the excavation depends on various factors

The depth of the excavation depends on the planned substructure and/or the existing subsoil. It also plays a role how high the sandbox should be or at what height the play level should be. With a deeper excavation, you can lower the level of the sandbox so that the seating level is at ground level or just above it.

Which substructure should my sandbox have?

A substructure made of gravel and a breathable foil that is attached to the wooden structure is often recommended. This way, water can later drain out of the sandpit and it is difficult for weeds to grow in it. An excavation of about 15 cm depth is recommended here.

A substructure made of old pavement slabs is also conceivable. However, water that has penetrated this sandbox accumulates very easily. Such a sandbox should always be covered when it rains.

What do I fill the sandbox with?

Sand is available in many places and at different prices, but not everyone is suitable for a sandbox. You probably pay attention to the quality of the wood you use to build a sandbox so that your children cannot be harmed by it. The same should also apply to the sand. This can also contain harmful substances or germs.

For this reason, you should only buy tested play sand and not use cheap ones from the gravel pit. Play sand is checked for pollutants and germs and must be free of them. It also doesn't contain clay, which could leave permanent stains on your children's clothes. Fill the sandbox about half full with sand, measured from the bottom to the top edge.

Preparations for the sandpit construction:

  • find the ideal location
  • Mark out the size and shape of the sandbox
  • Specify the height of the sandbox
  • choose substructure
  • Dig the soil deep enough

tips

For a sandpit with a gravel substructure, you should dig out the ground about 15 cm deep.
