In view of numerous reports of thread problems, home gardeners opt for a lawn trimmer with a cutter head. In practice, it sometimes turns out that a mowing line cuts better and cleaner on stone edges. Instead of replacing the device, simply convert your brushcutter from blade to cord technology. This guide explains how to do it.

Material, tools and preparatory work
Lawn trimmer manufacturers usually offer their models in both versions. Except for the cutting technology, these devices are the same. This has the advantage that you can exchange the cutter head for a line dispenser without worrying about compatibility. The following materials and tools will be required:
- Line dispenser with spool and mowing line
- 1 angle with 25 mm leg length, 13 mm width and 2 mm thickness
- grinder
- 2 torx lens screws, screwdriver
The angle fulfills the function of a knife to shorten a too long mowing line while the engine is running. For this purpose, the angle is given the necessary bevel on the bench grinder. This measure is recommended in order to protect the plastic cover on the mowing head from excessive wear because a line that is too long hits it.
Convert grass trimmer - instructions
In order for the blade disc to be replaced by a thread dispenser, both components must have the same mount. Some manufacturers use square mounts, while other manufacturers use round mounts. For this reason, a thread dispenser from other manufacturers is not compatible even if all other dimensions fit.
You can pull off the blade unit or lever it out of its anchorage with a screwdriver. This step requires the greatest effort when converting the grass trimmer. Then place the new thread dispenser precisely on the square or round metal bracket in the center.
Finally, take the ground angle and screw it to the edge of the mowing head. If the mowing line is pulled a little too far from the spool, the self-made knife cuts off the excess length with the first turn. In this way, the cutting line only trims the lawn and protects the protective hood.

Changing the thread on the lawn trimmer (€31.33) is not a difficult undertaking. Soaking the new mowing line in water for a day will allow it to be wound up more flexibly. Pay particular attention to the correct winding direction, which is indicated by an arrow on the spool.
