Every garden has corners and edges that a lawnmower cannot reach. This is where the thin line of a grass trimmer comes in handy to cut off even the last blade of grass. Annoying when the line from the mowing head does not follow. This guide summarizes the most common causes of this problem with tips for the solution.

How does a line mower head actually work?
Lawn trimmers (88.00€) are equipped with a mowing head with an integrated coil. A cutting line is wound onto this spool, the two ends of which protrude from the line mowing head. As the spool rotates rapidly, both thread ends cut off grass and light bushes.
The longer and more intensively you use your grass trimmer, the more the cutting lines wear out. If the thread becomes so short that it no longer cuts the blades of grass, the thread brake in the mowing head must be released. Tap the running grass trimmer once on the ground so that the integrated automatic system pushes in new thread. The thread brake briefly releases the double thread while the centrifugal force pulls it forward a little. An overhang cutting edge shortens a piece of thread that has turned out to be too long to the correct length.
Tapping does not let the thread follow - what to do?
If the spool does not push the line after the mowing head has been tapped, the automatic function is blocked. We have compiled the most common causes with tips for solving the problem for you here:
- Thread wound in the wrong direction: unwind and wind in the opposite direction
- The thread is jammed: unwind, clean the bobbin and thread, wind it up a little more loosely
- Line too thick: check the manual for the right size and replace the mowing line
- Damaged spool: Purchase and install a new spool that is compatible with the model
Mowing lines made of abrasive, rough material and with three to six edges are particularly durable. They also don't tear as easily when they come into contact with stones. All resilience is pointless if the line gets stuck in the spool due to its angular shape and cannot catch up. Therefore, switch to a round, smooth thread that the automatic can push better.
tips
If the line on the grass trimmer keeps breaking, the material has lost its elasticity. Have you just bought the mowing line or stored it for a long time? Then soak the wire or complete coil in water for 24 to 48 hours before next use.
