Environmental influences such as rain, snow and sunlight take a toll on the arbor over the years. It is therefore necessary to protect the house from weathering by regularly painting it. One popular option that we'd like to explore in more detail here is varnishing.

Varnish protects the garden shed from moisture

The difference between varnish and glaze

Glazes (€66.50) form a transparent film, while varnishes cover the wood with a closed layer of paint. For this reason, glazes contain significantly fewer dyes than varnishes, where the grain no longer shines through.

paint the wood properly

To ensure that the coating adheres for a long time and the wood is reliably protected, three work steps are necessary:

  • Thoroughly sand and prime the wood.
  • Sand again, paint a second time.
  • Sand and paint again.

The tool you need

  • The highest quality brushes and paint rollers possible ensure an even application.
  • Stirrer to mix the paint.
  • Ink tray for wetting and wiping off rollers with ink.

The foundation

First sand the wood, vacuum or brush the surface and only then apply the primer. This contains active ingredients that reliably protect the wood from mold and fungal infestation. In the case of heavily resinous wood, which is not recommended for building a garden shed, you should definitely use an opaque primer.

varnishing wood

You will achieve the best result here if you apply several coats of paint. First paint all edges with a brush. Large areas are then painted with a roller in the direction of the grain.

Two-tone paintwork

At the moment, houses in Swedish red or Frisian blue with contrasting white window frames and doors are extremely popular. To ensure that this painting succeeds without ugly tears of color, first prime the entire garden house. (24.90 €)

  • Then paint the lighter color with a primer, intermediate and top coat.
  • Let it dry completely and very well.
  • Mask the surface carefully with masking tape or a special masking tape.
  • Paint the masked area in the base color. This seals the smallest gaps and the paint does not run out.
  • This is followed by two coats of paint in the contrasting color.

tips

You should definitely carry out this work on a windless day so that dust or earth that is thrown up does not settle on the still damp paintwork.
