Only a few varieties of shrub veronica or Hebe are really hardy. Most species tolerate little or no frost. Perennials only survive in the garden if you overwinter them properly, but even then there is no guarantee that the plants will survive.

Overwinter shrub veronica in the garden

Most types of Hebe are only conditionally hardy. They tolerate a maximum of minus five degrees, and even then only for a few days.

If you want to overwinter shrub veronica in the garden, spread a thick layer of grass clippings or leaves over it.

Cover the plants with fir branches or brushwood. However, this does not always help in an unprotected location. If the winter is very cold, you have to reckon with the fact that the shrub veronica will die despite winter protection from the wet and cold.

tips

Don't cut back Heben too much before winter, like Hebe Golden Globe. Then the plant freezes even faster. Cut back frozen shoots in spring.
