Magnolias are beautiful ornamental trees for the garden, which enchant the viewer with their lush flowers in spring. However, even in ideal conditions, these exotic plants grow very slowly.

Annual growth between 30 and 50 centimeters

Most young magnolias can still be purchased in specialist shops or in a tree nursery from a size of approx. 30 to 50 centimeters at affordable prices. Larger and therefore older specimens, on the other hand, often cost a hefty price - hardly surprising if you know about the slow growth of these trees. Even under optimal conditions, most varieties grow between 30 and 50 centimeters a year, not only in height but also in width. However, these plants can become very large, depending on the variety, heights of between five and ten meters are not uncommon. In good locations, magnolias also reach an age of 100 years and more, as evidenced by many stately specimens in the parks of former mansions.

tips and tricks

Most magnolias have a more shrub-like habit and branch out just above the ground. Few species of magnolia exhibit naturally as a tree.
