Passion flowers (Passiflora) impress with their unusual blooms in magnificent colors. The climbing plant from the passion flower family (Passifloraceae) originally comes from the warm regions of South America, but also thrives in the home garden. The plant family is very species-rich with around 500 members.

Which location does the passion flower prefer?
Passiflora feels most comfortable in a sunny, sheltered location. However, the plant should be protected from the midday sun.
How is the passion flower planted / sown?
You can get the passion flower seeds in specialist shops or you can get them from a passion fruit available in the supermarket - this also belongs to the passion flower family. From January, the seedlings can be grown on the windowsill or in the greenhouse and are finally planted out as young plants from mid to late May. Passion flowers grow very quickly.
At what distance are the individual passion flowers planted?
In general, a planting distance of 50 centimeters is recommended for most species.
What soil does the passion flower need?
Passion flowers need loose, nutrient-rich soil that is as light as possible with clay. You can mix the potting soil yourself with garden soil, sand and clay powder.
Is the passion flower annual or perennial?
Most passion flower species (including the popular blue passion flower) are perennial and can be overwintered in a frost-free but cool spot.
When does the passion flower bloom?
The striking flowers of the passion flower appear between June and September. Many varieties are very floriferous, such as the blue passion flower (Passiflora caerulea) or the red flowering grape passion flower (Passiflora racemosa). Other varieties, on the other hand, need very good care in order to open their magnificent flowers.
How can the passion flower be propagated?
The passion flower is relatively easy to propagate from seeds or cuttings.
Good and bad neighbors
The passion flower comes into its own in the company of ivy and summer flowers such as summer asters, daisies and almond roses (summer azaleas). It also gets along very well with astilbes and lupins.
