Do spring roses need to be watered?
Spring roses like it dry rather than moist. The spring bloomers do not tolerate waterlogging at all. Watering is not necessary as the soil is usually moist enough during the flowering period in spring.
Most spring roses wither over the summer. Even if individual leaves are wilted on the ground, the perennials should not be watered.
How are spring roses properly fertilized?
If you have improved the soil with compost before planting, the spring rose does not need any further fertilizer. It is advisable to mulch them well in autumn. This keeps the soil sufficiently moist. Weeds are kept away and the decaying material releases new nutrients.
When is the pruning of the lenten rose necessary?
- Cut off faded flowers
- remove wilted and diseased leaves
- Prune the perennial completely in autumn or before flowering
What diseases and pests can occur?
Aphids are more common. They can be rinsed off with a jet of water. A treatment with detergent solution is also helpful.
A viral disease known as “Black Death” occurs less frequently. The leaves and flowers along the veins turn black. Infested spring roses cannot be saved and must be disposed of with household waste - do not throw them in the compost!
Are spring roses hardy?
As a plant that already shows the first flowers in February, the spring rose is absolutely hardy. It doesn't need any winter protection. A mulch cover is still useful, as the perennial will then sprout more quickly.
Dense snow cover can become a problem for very young plants. They should therefore be provided with a light protection. This also applies to seedlings that are grown in pots.
tips
Lenten rose roots are very delicate. In addition to the main root that grows deep into the earth, the perennial forms a dense network of roots below the surface. When pulling weeds, make sure that you only chop the soil superficially, if at all.
