In the wild he meets us on embankments or along the railway tracks, where he presents himself a little puny. Under ideal conditions, however, the butterfly bush unfolds a majestic and opulent appearance in the garden bed and tub. You can find out what these are here.

The butterfly bush likes it warm and sunny

A butterfly bush wants this location

In order for a butterfly bush to develop its floral potential in all its glory, the following conditions are important at the location:

  • Sunny to partially shaded position
  • Warm and sheltered from the wind
  • Loose, permeable and rather poor soil
  • Fresh to moderately dry
  • Slightly acidic, neutral or alkaline pH
  • Sufficient distance to the plant neighbors of at least 100 cm

In view of these site qualities, it can be said that Buddleja davidii and its beautiful varieties thrive in any normal garden soil. Any normal compost-based potting soil is suitable for cultivation in the bucket, enriched with sand, fine grit (€46.95) or perlite (€37.51) breathing flakes for reliable permeability.
