Although slotted maple is not part of the natural inventory of our forests, thanks to its Asian origin it already has a robust winter hardiness in its luggage. In order for the immigrated deciduous tree to be able to call up its wonderful properties in the Central European climate, the following site conditions are important:
- Sunny to partially shaded position
- No blazing sun at noon
- Warm and sheltered from the wind
- Nutrient-rich, fresh, moist garden soil
- Well drained and without waterlogging
The dainty Acer palmatum feels best in the light shade under majestic deciduous trees. The more colorful the leaves, the sunnier the spot should be. The Asian Japanese maple likes increased humidity very much, so a location in the vicinity of a pond, stream and waterfall is advantageous. In these locations, however, it must be ensured that its shallow root system does not become waterlogged.
