Buddleja davidii and the Chinese summer lilac (Buddleja alternifolia) are particularly common in German gardens. In addition, there are about 100 other variations, not all of which are hardy. These include the ball summer lilac (Buddleja globosa) and the yellow summer lilac (Buddleja x weyeriana).

The most beautiful varieties of Buddleja davidii

Buddleja davidii is a very fast-growing summer lilac that grows between 30 and 150 centimeters per year under the right conditions and depending on the variety. Among its numerous varieties there are flower colors in white, violet, lilac-blue, light blue or pink. The strongly fragrant flowers are arranged in multi-flowered panicles that are up to 30 centimeters long and upright or arching, depending on the variety. Robust and easy to care for: Chinese summer lilac (Buddleja alternifolia)

The Chinese or alternate summer lilac is also a very strong-growing species, up to four meters high and just as wide. The shrub develops long, thin, widely spread and overhanging branches and is best shown on wall crowns and in large planters. In June / July purple-purple, tart-scented flowers appear in numerous clusters, about four to five centimeters wide, along the entire length of the previous year's branches. The Chinese summer lilac can be combined well with roses or other summer-flowering small shrubs such as bearded dandelion (Caryopteris), blue rue or silver bush (Perovskia) or cinquefoil (Potentilla). It prefers a sunny and dry location.

tips

While Buddleia prefers a rather dry and well-drained soil, it will tolerate a good shovelful of mature compost when planting.
