Climbing ivy is very popular as a facade greening or privacy hedge. The plant grows quickly and does well in shady locations. If a pure ivy wall is too boring for you, combine the ivy with clematis, botanically clematis.

The clematis inspires with dreamlike flowers

That's why ivy and clematis go so well together

Ivy on the house wall or as a privacy hedge looks a bit boring in the long run. Therefore, plant other climbing plants between the ivy. In addition to roses, clematis or clematis are ideal for combining with ivy.

Depending on the variety, clematis produces very beautiful flowers in many different colors. If you plant ivy as a background, the flower colors of the clematis come into their own.

In slightly sunnier places, you can also use roses to add color between the ivy leaves. By choosing the right varieties, you will ensure that new flowers appear between the ivy throughout the gardening season.

The best location for ivy and clematis

Like clematis, ivy likes shade. Both plants prefer semi-shady locations.

The soil must be slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging at all costs. Some caution is required when fertilizing, since clematis needs to be fertilized more frequently, while ivy only tolerates moderate amounts of fertilizer.

Both plants need a trellis on which they can climb. Well suited are wooden walls on which the adhesive roots of the ivy find sufficient support.

Proper care for ivy and clematis as neighbors

If possible, give clematis a head start in growth by planting the plants a year or two earlier. They will then become nice and strong and will not let the ivy overgrow them so quickly.

Ivy does not grow quite as luxuriantly in the first two years. From the third year, however, you have to cut it back regularly so that it does not restrict the more delicate clematis too much.

Both plants are poisonous. Therefore always wear gloves when cutting ivy and clematis!

tips

It is better not to pull ivy directly on the wall. The adhesive roots can damage facades. In addition, ivy cannot always be removed without leaving any residue.
