The shamflower inspires above all with its attractive flowers. This guide explains how you can increase beauty!

The shamflower can be easily propagated from seeds

How to multiply the shamflower

There are two ways to propagate the shamflower:

  • with cuttings
  • by sowing

propagation by cuttings

You can propagate cuttings all year round. How it works:

  1. Prepare small pots with a 1:1 mixture of peat and sharp sand.
  2. Cut top cuttings from the mother plant with a length of 10 to 15 centimeters.
  3. Plant two to three cuttings in each pot.
  4. Put a translucent plastic bag over the cuttings or the pots. In this way you ensure a consistently high level of humidity.
  5. Place the pots in a light but not full sun spot.
  6. It is important to consider the temperature requirements: room temperature should prevail in the room; the soil temperature must be between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. If you multiply your shamrocks in winter, it makes sense to place the pots on a radiator.
  7. As soon as the cuttings show their first shoots, you know that roots have formed.
  8. Remove the plastic bags.
  9. Water the young plants, but only moderately. Make sure that the root ball always remains evenly moist.
  10. Plant the young shamrocks in their final planter after another one to two weeks. It is important to continue cultivating them like fully grown plants.

Note: Do not root the cuttings in the glass of water. Otherwise, it can happen that the sensitive roots later suffer considerable damage and die when planted correctly.

Propagation by seed

Although the propagation of cuttings is the best method for the shamflower, you can also try sowing.

  1. First, scratch the seeds briefly to facilitate germination.
  2. Fill your chosen seed pot with seed compost.
  3. Spread the seeds on top and then cover them lightly with soil.
  4. Moisten the substrate.
  5. Cover the planter with translucent film.
  6. To prevent mold and rot, you should briefly air the film once a day.
  7. After germination, proceed as with the cuttings propagation.

Tips:

  • A mini greenhouse is even better than a pot and foil. (7.95 €)
  • Use commercially available cactus soil or alternatively young plant soil.
  • Depending on the quality of the seeds, it can take a few weeks to several months before germination begins.
