Anyone who takes the trouble to scrape spaetzle themselves often wants to prepare a larger quantity and freeze it in advance. You can also extend the shelf life of purchased spaetzle enormously by freezing it.

Spaetzle should be cooked al dente before freezing

Freeze spaetzle from the supermarket

Are spaetzle on sale in the supermarket right now? You can easily freeze purchased spaetzle and store it in the freezer for up to six months beyond the expiry date printed on it.
Simply place the package with the still durable spaetzle in the *** freezer. You do not need to decant or prepare the spaetzle. If the package has already been opened, fill the spaetzle into a freezer bag or a box suitable for deep-freezing and close the container carefully.

Freeze homemade spaetzle

  1. Rinse the ready prepared al dente spaetzle with plenty of cold water.
  2. Spread them out on a wooden board, put it in the freezer and let the spaetzle freeze through.
  3. Only now fill the hard-frozen spaetzle into freezer bags or freezer boxes. This way you prevent them from freezing into a lump and you can always take out the amount you need.
  4. Place the tightly closed freezer containers labeled with the freezing date in the *** freezer compartment.

If you want to save yourself the hassle of freezing in two steps, you can put the spaetzle in small portions directly into freezer bags or boxes suitable for freezing. This will freeze you together, but that's not a bad thing if you use individual portions at once.

Thaw frozen spaetzle

Frozen spaetzle should not be thawed in the refrigerator or at room temperature. This would make them very sticky and mushy. It is better to heat them directly. You have three options for this:

  • Put the frozen spaetzle in boiling salted water. After about a minute, the individual spaetzle will float to the top and can be strained.
  • Toss the frozen spaetzle directly in the frying pan in hot butter. For this purpose, the spaetzle should be loose, i.e. not frozen into a lump.
  • Place the spaetzle on a plate, sprinkle with a little water and place in the microwave for a short time on low power. However, you will achieve a fresher consistency with the two methods mentioned above.
