If you want to create a garden pond of a certain size, you can't avoid a job: In any case, a large hole has to be dug in the garden soil. Luckily there is now motorized equipment for this. Read below how to use this.

Dredging a pond hollow - yes or no?
The advantages and disadvantages of entrusting the digging work for the garden pond to an excavator are obvious. The advantages would be:
- No exhausting backbreaking work
- time saving
As with all things, however, there are also disadvantages:
- More costs
- Rather only rough work possible
- load on the garden
Whether you opt for motorized help or for your own muscle work is of course a question of personal fitness or the availability of possible strong (human) helpers. On the other hand, you have to weigh up how much additional financial effort you are willing to pay for the energy and time savings.
On the other hand, you also have to consider that when digging the pond hollow, an excavator can only do the rough work. Especially if you want to use a prefabricated pool, you have to reckon with a lot of fine manual work afterwards.
Using an excavator to dig out the hollow in the pond is therefore worthwhile, especially for large, self-planned ponds without a too rigorously defined shape.
A negative side effect of excavator use that should not be underestimated is the stress on the garden caused by the tracks on the lawn. This must also be included in the cost-benefit ratio.
What costs can you expect?
Which costs you can incur when dredging a pond depends on the amount of work you have to do yourself. After all, you don't have to completely hand over the digging work to someone else. Small excavators can also be borrowed and used independently without legal permission. The advantage here is not only the lower costs, but also the fun and experience factor for one or the other.
To rent a mini excavator for private use, you have to calculate upwards of around 120 euros per day.
For those who prefer to be on the safe side when it comes to professionalism, we recommend renting an excavator with an excavator driver or an experienced landscaper. The hourly costs are around 50 to 70 euros. In the case of a large pond with several pond zone levels, around 2 to 4 working hours can be incurred.
