The lantana comes from South America, where mild temperatures prevail over the long term. Accordingly, the popular summer bloomer does not cope very well with winter frost and must be cleared into winter quarters in good time. Do not wait until the thermometer drops below zero, because then the plant may already have been damaged.

The frost-sensitive lantana cannot be overwintered outdoors in our latitudes

What should be considered before wintering?

A light pruning, in which all faded flowers are removed and the shoots are shortened by about half, makes it easier for the small shrub to overwinter. Very large specimens therefore also require less space in the winter quarters. During the cut, check the plant thoroughly for pest infestation and, if necessary, fight uninvited guests.

Overwinter in a cool room

A bright and frost-free place with an average temperature of around eight degrees is well suited for hibernation. The root ball should never dry out completely, even in winter. Water the plant as soon as the top inches of soil feel dry. Moderate watering is sufficient, fertilization is not used at all.

Hibernation in the living room

The tropical plant can easily be cared for in a warm living room. Here, however, it does not really rest and produces new flowers throughout the winter. As a result, you must consider the following points:

  • The location must be as bright as possible.
  • Water adequately when dry.
  • Fertilize every four weeks even in winter.
  • Regularly remove faded and dead leaves.
  • In the room, the plant is sensitive and we like to be attacked by pests. Therefore check frequently.

tips

Especially in cold rooms with low humidity, the lantana evaporates a lot of moisture over the leaf surface even in the winter months. Here it has proven useful to loosely tie the cut back plant together.
