Red clover is not always very popular in the garden because the weed is difficult to control. You can propagate red clover as an ornamental plant or to harvest for the kitchen and medicinal teas by sowing or dividing the roots. Tips for red clover propagation.

A horror for some, a dream for others: a carpet made of red clover

This is how red clover multiplies

On the one hand, red clover reproduces through the seeds that ripen in the pods of the legume. On the other hand, the long taproot forms many runners from which new plants sprout.

In a favorable location, red clover multiplies all by itself, so much so that you can hardly get the weed out of the garden again.

Seeds are scattered in all directions as the pods burst, allowing you to find new seedlings anywhere in the garden. The roots are so robust that new plants can grow from even the smallest remains.

Grow new plants from seeds

To grow red clover in the garden yourself, you can propagate it from seeds, stolons or by dividing the roots. Red clover propagation is possible from April to September.

For red clover propagation by seed, sprinkle the seeds on a propagation bed with normal garden soil. Red clover can also be sown in pots. However, the pot must be as deep as possible.

Red clover is a light germinator and is not covered with soil. Keep the seed moist but not too wet.

Propagating red clover by stolons

Root division is unnecessary with red clover. The plant forms so many stolons that you can simply pinch out as many as you need.

Place them in loose garden soil or a pot prepared with garden soil. The planting distance should be 20 centimeters.

Large-scale red clover propagation

Red clover is grown agriculturally. The plant is used for various purposes:

  • green manure
  • fodder
  • ornamental plant
  • weed
  • medicinal plant

In order to obtain large quantities of new seed, red clover is sown and not propagated by root division. The seed is specially selected for the respective application. Red clover seed for animal feed or green manure is not suitable for growing sprouts.
