Ranunculus is not only a bedding and garden plant, but also a popular pot plant! Anyone who does not have their own garden can cultivate this flowering plant in a pot on the balcony, terrace or even in the four walls of their own home. The demands are low. But what is to be considered?

Potted ranunculus can be grown both indoors and outdoors

The size of the planter

Whether stone, terracotta, plastic or another material - ranunculus can be cultivated in all kinds of pots and tubs. It is best to choose a container that is not too large. These plants don't need a lot of space. They die in autumn every year, only to sprout again from the bulb in spring. They do not increase in size with age.

Pots with a diameter of 15 to 20 cm are usually sufficient. If you grow the ranunculus from seed, a 10 cm wide pot is sufficient after pricking out. Repot the plant later. The depth of the vessel should be at least 10 cm.

Put the onion in the pot/bucket

The peculiar looking bulb of the ranunculus is placed in the pot like this:

  • Soak onion in water for 4 to 6 hours
  • Half fill the pot with soil
  • ensure good drainage
  • Place the onion feet down on the ground
  • Cover with a layer of soil about 5 cm thick
  • keep moist

Find a location

Both indoor and outdoor locations, such as on the terrace, are suitable for ranunculus. It is important that you place this plant in a place where there is no blazing sun.

Sunny to shady locations in a location protected from rain and wind are better suited. Also, make sure the location is out of the reach of small children and pets (ranunculus are poisonous)! Then only the right care is missing and the plant really blossoms…

tips

Repotting in larger vessels is usually spared, since the ranunculus does not become wider or larger. It should only be placed in fresh potting soil every year.
