Probably the most important aspect of caring for the ranunculus bush is cutting it. But here you can do a lot wrong as an ignorant. Read below what a cut is necessary for and how to proceed!

Regular pruning gives the ranunculus its beautiful shape

Reasons that make cutting useful

Among others, there are the following reasons that can speak for a cut of the ranunculus bush:

  • propagation by cuttings
  • stolon propagation
  • stimulate flowering
  • extend flowering time
  • avoid proliferation
  • Prevent balding
  • curb growth
  • keep height shorter
  • remove diseased parts

Thin out regularly, do not cut back

With this fast-growing shrub, it is less advisable to start radically with secateurs in spring or autumn and shorten all the shoots. This only leads to the shrub becoming increasingly bare from below over the years.

It is therefore much better to check every year which shoots are more than two years old. These are removed right at the base. This process is called clearing. As a result, the ranunculus bush permanently rejuvenates itself by producing new shoots.

The ideal time to thin out

Prune your ranunculus bush right after flowering! Do not only remove the older shoots, but also crossing and diseased branches. At the same time, you now have the opportunity to cut off the old flowers. This means that the ranunculus bush is willing to develop new flower buds. A rebloom in August is then no longer a rarity.

Cut to avoid overgrowth

The ranunculus bush is all too happy to form foothills. Because of this, life with him can sometimes become a really challenging affair. If the runners are not removed, the shrub will spread unhindered and quickly crowd out other plants. It is therefore better to remove the foothills.

Stimulate flowering

If you want to witness an abundance of blooms on your ranunculus bush every year, you need to prune it properly! After the first blooms, which usually lasts from April to June, cut off the wilted flowers! The plant branches behind the cutting point and puts on new flower buds.

Cut the flower shoots for the vase

Mainly the shoots from the previous year bear the flowers. If you would like to use them as decoration at home, you can simply cut them off. This is not a problem. The plant, which grows up to 2 m high, regenerates quickly.

Get cuttings to propagate

Do you want to propagate your ranunculus bush? Nothing easier than that! In addition to the option of separating and planting the runners, you can cut off cuttings. These are either placed in a glass with water or stuck in soil and kept moist.

tips

Be sure to refrain from trimming the ranunculus bush! This stimulates growth even more and over time the plant will bare from the inside.
