Autumn anemones - these long-lived perennials inspire with their filigree growth over which the delicate flower cups rise in September. If you like the autumn anemone, you can easily multiply it by dividing it.
Division is a good way to propagate and rejuvenate the autumn anemonemeaning and purpose of it all
The division is not only practical for propagating this perennial. There are other reasons why sharing makes perfect sense. This includes the following aspects, among others:
- Perennial has grown too big
- Perennial has become lazy
- rejuvenation
- now proliferates
- should be transplanted (they grow better through division)
When should you divide the autumn anemone?
It is best if you divide the autumn anemone in the spring before it sprout (between February and March). If you have missed this period, it is also possible to divide the autumn anemone until August. What is important is that it is not in its prime.
Alternatively, the autumn anemone can be divided in late autumn. But this is less recommended. Anyone who divides them in November must assume that the freshly planted sections are sensitive to frost. They should therefore be protected from severe frost with brushwood or compost.
Excavate and share
Before dividing the plant, it is advisable to cut it down to 10 cm above the ground. That way you can handle it better. To do this, take a pair of sharp pruning shears, gather up the old shoots and cut through the bundle once!
Now take a digging fork or a spade and proceed as follows:
- Lifting/digging rootstock out of the ground
- remove large clods of earth
- divide with a spade, saw or knife
- Sections should be about 10 cm tall and have at least 2 shoots
Plant in a suitable location
The sections should be planted in a sunny to partially shaded location. Dig a planting hole for each section and loosen the soil in it well! It is important that the soil is permeable, rich in nutrients and humic to loamy. Water well after planting!
tips
Especially in spring and when freshly divided (weakened), autumn anemones are susceptible to snail damage! Protect the young plants with snail fences or the like.
