Native to Mexico, morning glory (Ipomoea) is a short-lived plant that is grown annually in this country and re-grown from seed every year. So that unsightly corners and trellises in the garden can already be covered with the colorful funnel-shaped flowers of the morning glory in early summer, the young plants should be brought indoors in good time.

Since the morning glory only thrives once a year in our latitudes, it is advisable to bring it forward so that you can enjoy the climbing plant for longer

The window sill is the perfect place to grow morning glory

Since there can often be light night frosts outdoors in May in this country, morning glory should not be planted outdoors until the end of May at the earliest. In a cool spring, it can also be problematic that the seeds of the morning glory need a relatively stable germination temperature of between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius during the germination phase of about two weeks. The right conditions for this usually prevail on a window sill in the room anyway, so morning glory is usually preferred indoors. As soon as the weather permits and the tender little plants are about 10 centimeters high, they can be planted out in their intended place in the garden.

Save time and effort when planting out

Consider the following factors when preferring the morning glory on your windowsill:

  • morning glory seeds are dark germs
  • quite a few varieties of morning glory are poisonous (caution with small children and pets)
  • Direct sowing in the pots planned for later saves pricking out

If the early young plants are intended for the greening of the balcony, then the direct cultivation of the seeds in the later planter is a good idea. Otherwise, three or four seeds can always be sown together in a compostable pot so that the delicate roots do not have to be injured when planting out. Labeling the seed pots enables the specific combination of different colored varieties when planting out in the garden for particularly beautiful color effects.

With the right care too numerous blooms

When it comes to fertilization, the increase in morning glory does not automatically mean an increase in flowers. Although well-fertilized morning glory grows faster and more vigorously, a substrate that is too nutrient-rich can also lead to a lack of flowers. In order for many flowers to form, you should therefore only fertilize very specifically and ensure stronger branching with pruning.

tips

Pulling morning glory indoors is only recommended for the corresponding head start in spring. If you want to sow morning glory later in the year as a privacy screen or as an uncomplicated climbing plant, it is better to sow the seed directly on the spot.
