Hydrangeas are ideal for growing in pots and decorate the patio or balcony with their blooms. The hydrangea puts a lot of effort into flowering and must therefore be regularly transferred to a new planter.
The hydrangea should be repotted every two to four years
How often does it need to be repotted?
Depending on the size of the hydrangea, you will need to repot the hydrangea about every two to four years. This gives the roots enough space in the flower pot.
The right planter
Choose a new pot that is two, even better three sizes larger than the old one. The fresh soil also serves as a water reservoir and the thirsty hydrangea does not need to be watered quite as often in the summer months. Make sure the pot has holes in the bottom to allow excess water to drain.
Which substrate is suitable?
Always use a special soil for hydrangeas. Alternatively, you can place the hydrangea in rhododendron or azalea soil. These substrates have a low pH value and thus meet the special needs of the hydrangea.
This is how it is repotted
When repotting, it is important to note a few special features. Follow these steps:
- Submerge the plant for a while so that the roots can soak up water.
- Carefully remove the hydrangea from the old container. If this does not succeed, cut open the pot with scissors. - Lay the shards over the holes in the bottom of the pot so that the water drain cannot be blocked by soil.
- Fill in some substrate and place the hydrangea in the pot. The plant should not sit any lower than in the old container.
- Fill with soil and press down. Leave a space of about one to two centimeters at the edge of the pot.
- Water the hydrangea thoroughly. Be sure to throw away any liquid that collects in the saucer after a while.

The so-called Mother's Day pots, early flowering hydrangeas that are available in stores from February, are only suitable for outdoor use to a limited extent. Acclimate these greenhouse grown plants to the changed conditions very gently after repotting.
