Whether it's goose cinquefoil, rock cinquefoil, five cinquefoil (also known as creeping cinquefoil) or some other species - many cinquefoils are known to spread in an instant. If you don't stop them, they can take over the garden under favorable conditions…

Cinquefoil grows very profusely

How do you get rid of cinquefoil?

As with other plants, there are several methods to combat cinquefoil. Basically, for the sake of the environment, mechanical fighting is always preferable. But how does this work best with cinquefoil?

Mechanical annihilation strategy

First, the cinquefoil should be cut away above ground. You can also use a lawn mower for this. Then it continues as follows:

  • Easier processing: with damp soil (otherwise individual parts break off quickly)
  • loosen the soil with a hoe
  • dig up and pick out all the roots
  • If necessary, plant other plants such as avens, cranesbill, Waldsteinia

As an alternative to digging up, the plants can be plucked out. But that doesn't give you long peace from them. Many species reproduce by themselves with the help of their root runners. B. get out with a weed puller.

When should you fight it?

Get rid of this weed as soon as you notice it. Then you have the best chance. If many leaves have already sprouted, you should remove them together with the roots before May/June (beginning of the flowering period). If you don't do this, you risk that the cinquefoil will form seeds and, thanks to them, continue to multiply.

The cinquefoil survives the winter time

If you think 'Cinquefoil will definitely not come back next year', you are wrong. This plant comes through the winter unscathed because it tolerates frost well. You'll see what's left of it by next spring at the latest.

Many species are used as medicinal herbs

  • Cinquefoil has a right to exist like other wild plants
  • Combat not mandatory
  • has beautiful flowers
  • is edible e.g. B. in salads (tastes sour)
  • works against diarrhea and inflammation in the mouth

tips

Chemical weed killers should be the emergency solution if nothing helps. They not only damage the plant itself, but often also destroy surrounding plants, contaminate the groundwater and poison insects.
