- Targeted intervention - no compulsion thanks to self-seeding
- Direct sowing from May
- Preculture is also possible: From April
There are three known methods of propagating blue cushion. Sowing is the simplest, safest and most proven method. How does it work in detail?

Targeted intervention - no compulsion thanks to self-seeding
The blue cushion loves to multiply by self-seeding if you let it… Are you one of those gardeners who place a lot of trust in nature and would rather watch the multiplication than intervene in a targeted manner? Then wait for the blue cushion to seed itself.
What is required? After the flowering period, you must not cut off the withered flowers. Alternatively, you can cut away most of the old bud sites and leave some to develop into capsules. The fruit capsules burst open when ripe and release their contained seeds.
Direct sowing from May
The seeds should not be sown directly outdoors before May. They can be sown not only in beds, but also in cracks in walls, between paving joints, in tubs and balcony boxes (€109.00).
Spread the seeds of the blue cushion. They should be easily incorporated into the soil (ideally a calcareous substrate). If they get into cracks in the wall, some earth is put over them. Keep the seeds moist in the following weeks so that they germinate quickly!
Preculture is also possible: From April
In addition to direct sowing, the seeds can be grown at home or in a greenhouse in a pot or seed tray. The whole thing can take place from April. If you sow the seeds by July at the latest, you can expect flowers in the same year.
That's how it's done:
- Put nutrient-poor seed soil in the seed tray
- Distribute the seeds, press them down lightly or cover them very thinly with soil (light germinators)
- Moisten the substrate with a hand sprayer and keep it moist
- put in a warm place to germinate
- ideal germination temperature: 20 °C to 25 °C
- Germination time: 1 to 4 weeks depending on the temperature
When the plants are about 4 weeks old, they can be pricked out. They will be planted out in May at the earliest. The selected location should be sunny and warm and have a nutrient-rich, permeable and calcareous substrate.
tips
Since the young plants are still quite sensitive, they should be protected in the first winter with brushwood or fleece, for example.
